There's a new man in town and he's a heart stealer

I’ve had a new man in my life for the last two weeks. This one is a definite keeper! He likes to snuggle and take naps, he stays up late with me watching documentaries and listens attentively when I start researching random things at 3 a.m. And when I rush back to my house at 6 in the morning, my little Boo Bear is having breakfast and coffee with his mom and dad.

Everyone kept trying to tell me how having a grandbaby was going to be life changing and I was all, “Whatever.” I mean, come on, I have six kids! These kids are my greatest love story! Each time one of them was put in my arms it was like a gift from heaven. I created my own little posse, my crew, my back-up for life. You mess with them, you mess with me. I’m the ringleader of these animals and it delights me whenever they go against the norm.

Each one is different, but they all are responsible, funny and smart. We aren’t friends, we are lifers and I’ll always be there for each one of them - even if it means driving all night, jumping on a plane or wrestling a rabid cat at midnight in 100-degree weather while my drunk sister films it for her Facebook posts.

But now this baby shows up and instead of walking around like a mama bear ready to rip the fence down and chase predators away, I’m waiting for the hole in the fence to appear so me and my little Boo Bear can float in their pool. My new bestie has arrived and I’m giddy and all marshmallow soft on the inside. Whereas I would have fought a circle saw and won - and still would - over my kids, I’m sitting in the backseat holding this little one’s hands and dreaming of Chick-fil-A Friday nights and Disney movies, while his parents gear up for the parent throw down of the century.

This little darling is like a special reward for standing guard for so many years. I’m not sleep deprived or worrying about all the million and one things that use to race through my mind about the right or wrong way to raise a child. All I’m thinking about is baking cookies and clearing out a room to make the best toy room EVER.

If I could figure out a way to stay home with my new bestie and hand feed him Cheerios while I kiss his little head, life would be beyond perfect. But the reality of the situation is the Drama Squad is holding me back. I’ve got a few more years to make them responsible lifers and keep them as safe as I can from temptations and bullies. And if there is some kind of reward sign up program, man, I’m about to cash in on a couple more grand babies and turn my backyard into a playground!
