Mansfield ISD athletes sign to play college sports

Families, friends, administrators and staff from across the district came together to cheer on nearly 90 Mansfield ISD student athletes who signed a ceremonial letter of intent to continue their athletic and academic careers in college.  

Students from MISD’s five traditional high schools participated in the district’s annual signing day ceremony, which coincided with National Signing Day, on Feb. 7.

“Parents and the community have come together to support our kids here today; it makes for a really fun day,” said Executive Director of Athletics Jerod Womack, noting that there is a unique and powerful level of support from families, staff and the community for these students.

Athletes stood one by one during the ceremony and were individually recognized for their hard work. For Legacy High School’s Todd Rochelle, the day meant a lot to him.

“We’ve put in time, effort, sweat, blood, injuries – we're here to celebrate it all,” said Rochelle who will play baseball for the University of Texas at San Antonio in the fall.

Lake Ridge High School’s Trey Craig says he’s proud of his fellow athletes who made it to Signing Day.

“It’s awesome to see everybody around my city going to do great things next year,” Craig said. “I’m just honored to be a part of it.”

Craig will play baseball for Texas A&M University in the fall.

Timberview High School seniors and twins Monserrat and Lupita Bueno will play soccer at Texas Woman’s University. The sisters say they look forward to spending a few more years together in college.

“Having a twin is just like having a built-in best friend. It's exciting to go through it together,” Monserrat Bueno said.

The sisters worked hard for this opportunity, and they felt excited to see the community’s support during this special day.

“It’s a blessing to see all the support around us and see the support for our future,” Lupita Bueno said.

Summit High School’s Cameron Berry has dreamed about playing football at the college level since he was a kid.  

“It’s definitely a blessing. It feels surreal to me,” Berry said. “I feel nervous but excitement at the same time.”

The senior will play football for Georgetown University in the fall.

Mansfield High School’s Noelia Berbers echos Berry’s feelings toward playing college sports.

“I’m really excited and nervous at the same time – it's a whole new environment but I’m playing the sport I love,” said Berbers, who will play soccer with Trinity University in the fall.

National Signing Day also spotlights Mansfield ISD’s commitment to Vision 2030, the district’s 10-year strategic plan ensuring students are life, career and college ready.

“These student athletes have worked extremely hard in the classroom, weight room, practice field, and competition field or court to prepare them to continue their education through athletics,” Womack said. “The relationships and skills that they have learned through their years in MISD not only allow them to be ready for higher education but also allow them to be ready for life.”
