As temperatures rise, mosquito activity increases throughout North Texas. The City of Mansfield works with Tarrant County Public Health each year to monitor mosquito populations and test for mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus.
While the city conducts mosquito surveillance from spring through the fall, residents can play an important role in reducing mosquito breeding areas around their homes and neighborhoods.
Mosquitoes need standing water to reproduce, and even small amounts of water can provide suitable breeding habitat. Regularly checking your property for items that collect water can help reduce mosquito activity.
Simple ways to help include:
Emptying containers that collect rainwater, such as buckets, toys and plant saucers.
Changing water in birdbaths and pet dishes regularly.
Removing leaves and debris from rain gutters.
Repairing outdoor leaks and improving drainage in low spots.
Maintaining swimming pools and ornamental features.
Residents are also encouraged to remember the Four D's of mosquito protection:
Dusk to Dawn - Limit outdoor activities during these times when possible.
Drain - Remove standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
Dress - Wear long sleeves and pants when spending time outdoors.
Defend - Use an EPA-registered insect repellent according to label directions.
When conditions warrant, the city may conduct targeted mosquito spraying in specific areas based on surveillance data and public health guidance.
