A racially offensive photo posted on social media by Summit High School students is being investigated by the Mansfield ISD.

The photo shows a young white man wearing a cowboy hat with a noose around the neck of a kneeling young Black man. The words around the photo state “Healthy (racial slur) for Sale. If interested visit summit baseball team.”

The photo, which is believed to have been taken on Halloween, was shared by Summit High School students on social media, according to the Mansfield school district.

The school district, which became aware of the social media posts Friday, released the following statement from Donald Williams, associate superintendent of communications:  “We were made aware today of a picture that was taken by Summit High School students that portrays racially insensitive language and offensive imagery. The photo was taken by the students on campus and later shared with other students and on social media.

“This type of behavior violates the core values of our campus and school district and will not be tolerated.

“’The actions of these students are completely unacceptable and do not convey the values of Mansfield ISD or Summit High School,” said Superintendent Dr. Kimberely Cantu. “Any students determined to be using their words, behavior, or social media to bully, demean or alienate other students or groups of students will face discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct.’

“Earlier this year, MISD set up a website with resources to encourage students, parents, and community members to speak up if they have a concern.  It is called ‘This is Our House,’ and can be accessed on the district’s website or by visiting MansfieldISD.org/ourhouse.”

The photo is still being investigated by campus administrators, Williams said. The students have been identified and confirmed as members of the Summit High School baseball team, he said.
