Mansfield ISD’s football teams opened the new season with three victories in games that were adjusted because of North Texas’ intense heat.
Mansfield, Summit and Timberview recorded wins while Lake Ridge and Legacy opened with losses.
Kickoff times were pushed back a half-hour for all games, water breaks were added during stoppages in play and misting fans were placed along the sidelines to keep players, coaches and other personnel safe as temperatures remained in the high 90s.
Timberview defeated South Grand Prairie, 35-0, on Thursday at Vernon Newsom Stadium. The Wolves continued the momentum from their 2022 season, when they won 13 games and reached the Class 5A Region I final.
Also Thursday, Legacy shut out Richland in the second half at R.L. Anderson Stadium, but the Broncos were unable to overcome the Royals in a 23-21 loss.
Mansfield registered a 42-31 Friday night victory over Waco Midway at R.L. Anderson Stadium.
In a battle of Mansfield ISD teams, Summit paced all MISD schools in scoring with a 55-7 win over Lake Ridge at Newsom Stadium.
This week, Lake Ridge plays host to Boswell at 7 p.m. Thursday at Newsom Stadium, while Legacy travels to face Crowley at Crowley ISD Stadium at 7 p.m. Thursday and Timberview visits Arlington Sam Houston at 7 p.m. at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington.
On Friday, Mansfield plays host to Summit at 7 p.m. at Newsom Stadium.
