The Mansfield ISD football teams enter the second week of the season with only one win among them, but that's guaranteed to change this week.
Summit and Mansfield renew their rivalry, with Summit as the home team marking its 25th year of existence. The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Vernon Newsom Stadium. The winning team will take an edge in the all-time series, as they enter this week's games each having won 12 of the 24 previous meetings.
Both teams suffered narrow losses in Week 1, with Mansfield falling to Arlington Martin, 38-35, and Summit losing to Red Oak, 20-15. Their history dates uninterrupted to Summit's first season on the field in 2002. When Summit opened that year Mansfield took its name to the new high school building on Broad Street while Summit claimed the existing campus on Turnell Warnell Road.
Mansfield and Summit have a long and intense history. The teams are close in total points scored, with Summit holding a slight edge at 618-607. Summit also holds the largest margin of victory, and the only two shutouts in the series, with back-to-back 57-0 wins in 2004 and 2005.
Mansfield registered the largest offensive outburst in the series, winning 63-22 in 2012. The Tigers also recorded the narrowest victory, 19-17, in 2014.
Summit won the first six meetings and seven of the first eight, scoring more than 40 points four times.
Mansfield recorded its first victory in the series in 2008, edging the Jaguars, 21-14. From 2010-2017, Mansfield won seven of the eight matchups, topping 40 points four times, including a 63-22 win in 2012.
The teams have split the past eight games, with Summit snapping a three-game Mansfield win streak in a 34-14 victory last season.
Timberview, which had the district's lone opening-week victory, travels to meet Denton Ryan at 7 p.m. Thursday at Collins Stadium. Lake Ridge meets San Angelo Central at 7 p.m. Friday at R.L. Anderson Stadium; and Legacy faces Little Elm at 7 p.m. Friday at Lobo Stadium.
