The Timberview track and field team is establishing a dynasty at this time of year.
The Wolves, who sent a boys 4x100 relay team to the UIL state meet for four consecutive years, are taking another trip this season after capturing the Class 5A Region I meet in a blazing 40.04 seconds on Saturday in Lubbock.
The 4x100 team, ranked No. 1 in Texas, is made up of Trysten Shaw, Kobe Smith, Cliff Nguyen and Brandon Gilmore Jr. They’ll try for the Mansfield ISD’s first state title in that event since Legacy captured the crown in 2018.
They won’t be alone in Austin on May 14-16. Several of Coach Trey Bates’ athletes qualified for state at Saturday’s regional meet, some in dominating fashion. The boys and girls team each captured area titles this year.
Among the girls, Timberview swept the top two places in the 100-meter hurdles, with Makenzie Piggee logging a 14.21 and Bailey Boyd following her at 14.31. Reagan Williams finished fourth in that event in 14.52.
Timberview’s girls 4x200 meter relay team also earned a trip to state, placing first in 1:37.89. That team includes Da’Nayah Batiste, Brooke Middleton, Jayla Bledsoe and Reagan Williams. Those four also qualified in the 4x100 relay, finishing second behind El Paso Chapin at 45.93, just 2/100ths of a second back.
In the 1600-meter hurdles, Denise Turey took the regional title in 43.08, with Piggee finishing third at 43.97.Brooke Middleton placed second in the 100 meters in 11.54.
In the field events, Destiny Ojo is headed to Austin in the discus after tossing 149-10, beating the second-place qualifier by 4 ½ feet. Alexandria Drummond took first place in the long jump with a leap of 19-00.00, a foot more than the second-place finisher.
For the boys, in addition to the 4x100 relay team, Gilmore finished first in the 400 meters in 46.25; Shaw placed first in the 300-meter hurdles (36.30); and Smith, Shaw, Sanders and Gilmore took first in the 4x400 relay (3:14.19).
In the field events, Jamar Weathers placed second in the discus with a throw of 174-03; and Chase Fisher qualified second in the long jump (23-06.75).
