Summit scored six touchdowns in the first half to breeze to a 58-14 victory over Grapevine on Thursday night at Vernon Newsom Stadium.

Quarterback Ian Gebhardt had two rushing touchdowns and passed for another, and running backs Adarion Nettles and Omogbolaha Daudu each ran for two scores as the Jaguars (3-1, 2-0 District 3-5A DII) overwhelmed the visiting Mustangs (1-4, 0-3) on homecoming night.

Grapevine took the opening kickoff and drove across midfield, but Summit’s Jarred Washington recovered a fumble and returned it to Grapevine’s 26-yard line. Two plays later, Nettles went 21 yards for a 7-0 lead 4 ½ minutes into the game.

Grapevine tied the score a minute later when quarterback Jailen Holmes threaded the needle on a pass to Brady Kays for a 38-yard TD that made the score 7-7. Summit answered with big pass play of its own three plays later. Gebhardt connected with Domonique Young for a 52-yard score that allowed Summit to retake the lead, which the Jags would not relinquish.

Summit’s defense forced a three-and-out by Grapevine, giving the offense the ball near midfield. Daudu rushed for 15 and 9 yards, Gebhardt for 24 and Nettles finished off the drive with an 11-yard scoring run for  21-7 lead with just over a minute left in the first quarter.

Another stop by the Summit defense forced a Mustangs punt, which was returned 44 yards by Young. A penalty against Grapevine for a late hit put the ball on the 12-yard line, and Gebhardt’s run three plays later gave Summit a 29-7 lead with 10 minutes left in the half.

Gabe Evans’ fumble recovery on the following kickoff put Summit in business at the 18-yard line. Two plays later, Daudu trotted in for a 35-7 lead. The Jags added two more scores before halftime.

Clarence Nevels III wrapped up the game’s scoring, tossing a TD pass to Dorian Jones from 7 yards out with 6:22 left to make the final score 58-14.
