The Royal Hotel (also known as Hotel Royal) is shown in 1890 at the corner of Smith and Oak streets.
Essie Royal was also a teacher. Audrey Middleton Galloway lived near the hotel and remembers that the hotel was thought to be old when she was born in 1905.
The hotel was later operated by the Foster family and then Benjamin and Melinda (Grimsley) Gibson.
Ernie Ray, son of Burl Ray and Vergie Gibson Ray, was born in the hotel in 1908.
