The Mansfield City Council will have a new face.
Voters in Saturday’s run-off election for City Council Place 5 chose financial advisor Todd Simmons to fill the final two years of council woman Julie Short’s term in the seat.
Simmons took 2,622 votes (64.92 percent) to defeat restaurant owner Melisa Perez, who earned 1,417 votes (35.08 percent) in the run-off of May 3 special election.
The run-off was needed after none of the four candidates in the May 3 special election gathered at least 50 percent of the vote. Also in the May 3 race were Lake Ridge High School administrator Lance Hood and Viridian Construction owner Eric Rozak.
The special election was called for Place 5 after Short, who has held the seat since May 2018, resigned to run for mayor against incumbent Michael Evans. Evans won the May 3 election, as did Place 2 incumbent Tamera Bounds, who was opposed by Lori Williams.
Simmons will serve the final two years of Short’s three-year term.
The results of the run-off election are unofficial until the votes are canvassed.
