The Mansfield Cemetery Association will hold a fund-raiser from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. June 3 at Fish City Grill, 581 W. Debbie Lane. A portion of the sales at Fish City Grill that day will be donated to the cemetery association. The non-profit association provides maintenance for the historic cemetery.

Since Ralph Man deeded land for the Cumberland Section of the Mansfield Cemetery in 1876, the responsibility of marking and tracking burials has passed through the hands of many persons and organizations.  Since Man’s donation, the cemetery has grown to almost 11 acres at the intersection of Burl Ray Road and West Kimball Street. Findagrave.com lists 4404 documented graves. This number only includes graves with some type of memorial with photos included.

Through record keeping, the Mansfield Cemetery Association believes there are many more burials on the grounds. Monuments may have been buried, removed or never installed.

The association is committed to preserving the history by documenting these lost burials. The association is considering a non-invasive GPR survey of the entire grounds to identify unmarked and undocumented burials and locate lost monuments.
