Timberview girls fall in state final; Lake Ridge boys make first trip to state

The Timberview girls basketball team reached the Class 5A state championship game – again – but the Lady Wolves fell to Frisco Liberty, 60-51, on Saturday.

Timberview (39-1) was making its first UIL State Tournament appearance since 2021, when it lost in the state semifinals. The Lady Wolves were ranked No. 1 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches final state rankings, while Liberty was No. 2.

The Class 5A state title is the second consecutive for Liberty, which reached the state tournament five times in the past six seasons.

On the boys side, Lake Ridge (32-6) is headed to the UIL Class 6A State Tournament this weekend, with a matchup against Plano East (38-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, March 8 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The winner of that game advances to the state championship game at 8:30 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the Round Rock Stony Point-Beaumont United game.

The Eagles have cruised through the postseason, winning five games by an average margin of 12 points, including a nine-point victory over Rockwall in the 5A Region II final Saturday. This is Lake Ridge’s first trip to the boys state basketball tournament.

Lake Ridge is No. 14 in the last Texas Association of Basketball Coaches rankings while Plano East is No. 1.
