Summit suffered four first-half turnovers – all of which were converted into touchdowns – as Crowley rolled to a 43-14 victory Thursday night at Vernon Newsom Stadium.
Summit (1-2) started the non-district game in promising style, getting a 21-yard carry from Braiden Dowell on the first play of the game, putting the Jaguars near midfield. Five plays later, a 14-yard pass from Demarus Bird to Isaiah Allen put the Jags at the Crowley 30-yard line. But the Eagles (3-0) forced a fumble on the next play, recovering at their own 41.
Three plays later, quarterback Caleb Williams hit Derrick Page on a 60-yard bomb for a 6-0 lead with less than four minutes gone.
Crowley recovered a fumble on the kickoff and scored two plays later when Williams connected with Antayvious Williams for a 24-yard score and 12-0 lead.
Summit got a great start to its next drive when Braylon Moore returned the kickoff 21 yards, giving the Jaguars a first-and-10 at Crowley’s 12-yard line. Bird’s 15-yard pass to Dorian McDade put the Jags on the board, 12-7, with just over 5 minutes left in the first quarter.
Summit’s Kyland Reed intercepted a pass on the next drive to set up the offense at its own 41-yard line, but an interception by Crowley’s Jonathan Blake, with a 42-yard return, put the Eagles at Summit’s 27-yard line, where they needed only three plays to score, taking an 18-7 lead with about 2 minutes left in the first quarter.
Crowley overwhelmed Summit from there, scoring the next four TDs to build a 43-7 lead. Summit got back into the end zone on its last possession of the game when Da’Vonte Johnson rushed for a 6-yard score with less than 1 ½ minutes left to make the final score 43-14.
