Mansfield will be taking to the streets Oct. 4 for National Night Out.

So far, more than 30 neighborhoods have signed up with the Mansfield Police Department for the annual event that asks residents to get out and get to know the people who live near them.

For 38 years, police departments and neighborhoods across the country have hosted National Night Out events to promote a sense of community and making neighborhoods safer.

“It’s a perfect opportunity to get to know the neighbors,” said Trey Kerr, community resources officer for the Mansfield Police Department.

“Some have a potluck and some go all out with a petting zoo and a disc jockey,” he said. “It’s as big or small as you want.”

Personnel from the Mansfield police and fire departments will attend as many parties as possible that evening, too.

While most of the nation celebrates National Night Out on the first Tuesday in August, temperatures are still a little toasty in the Lone Star State in August, so Texas celebrates the first Tuesday in October.
