Mansfield Girl Scout Kira Tracy recently completed a course in Panama with Outward Bound Costa Rica, an outdoor adventure nonprofit organization, part of the global Outward Bound network.
Kira participated in Sea Turtle, Service & Scuba Adventure course through Girl Scouts of the USA, traveling to the famous Caribbean archipelago of Bocas del Toro, Panama, to earn her PADI Scuba Diver certification. She put her skills to use on colorful coral reef dives, shipwreck dives and a magical bioluminescent night dive.
After her scuba adventures, Kira gave back on development projects based on the current needs of the local community – aiding in building projects in Isla Solarte. She headed to the natural wetlands of San San Pond Sak, where she got hands-on experience helping to release newly-hatched turtles, excavate old nesting sites and complete night patrols to monitor mama sea turtles laying their eggs in the sand. She also helped conduct beach cleanups to allow for baby turtles to easily make their way to the sea.
